چکیده

We have analyzed the properties of low column density Lyα forest clouds (12.8 ≤ logNHI ≤ 16.0) toward 5 QSOs at different redshifts, using high signal-to-noise data from the HIRES spectrograph on the Keck I 10-m telescope. The results are used to study the evolution of these clouds in the interval 2.1 < z < 3.5. We find: 1) The differential density distribution of forest clouds, f(NHI), fits an empirical power law with a typical slope of −1.35 → −1.55 for clouds with NHI ≤ 10 14.3 cm and changes extremely slowly with redshift over thisNHI range. 2) The deviation of f(NHI) from this power-law distribution at higher column densities depends on redshift: for higher redshifts, the departure from a powerlaw distribution occurs at higher NHI, which means that higher column density clouds rapidly disappear with decreasing redshift. This may be consistent with an invariant shape for the different column density distributions, but with a shift to a lower column density normalization for systems at different redshifts driven by the overall expansion of the universe. 3) The line widths of the forest clouds increase as redshift decreases. 4) The correlation strength of the forest clouds seems to increase as redshift decreases. We discuss these results in terms of the evolution of the IGM comparing the results to models and analytic descriptions of the evolution of structure in the gas. Ly α Cloud Size Evolution and Shape from QSO Groups

We present results from Keck HIRES, KPNO 4m/RC Spec and HST FOS spectra of a low-redshift, close QSO pair and a close, higher-redshift QSO triplet in order to explore the size evolution, shape and clustering of Ly α absorbers. The results we highlight here indicate that there is no strong evidence for evolution of Ly α cloud size with redshift, that strong (Wo > 0.4Å) Ly α forest absorbers are ...

Strong Clustering of High-Redshift Lyman-alpha Forest Absorption Systems

We use new observations of very weak CIV absorption lines associated with high-redshift Ly α absorption systems to measure the high-redshift Ly α line two-point correlation function (TPCF). These very weak CIV absorption lines trace small-scale velocity structure that cannot be resolved by Ly α absorption lines. We find that (1) high-redshift Ly α absorption systems with N(H I) > 3 × 10 cm are ...

A uniform analysis of the Ly - α forest at z = 0 − 5 :

We present results on the evolution and clustering of Ly-α lines at low redshift as part of our series “A uniform analysis of the Ly-α forest at z = 0− 5.” The sample analyzed in this paper contains 1298 Ly-α absorption lines from 165 quasar spectra mined from the archives of the Faint Object Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Our sample extends to z ≈ 1.7, slightly higher than t...

Reobservation of Close Qso Groups: the Size Evolution and Shape of Lyman Alpha Forest Absorbers

In order to study the size and shape of the absorbers that lie in front of the QSOs, in particular the Ly α forest, we present an analysis of 785 absorption lines in the spectra of five QSOs in close groupings: a pair (LB9605: 1517+2357 at z = 1.834 and LB9612: 1517+2356 at z = 1.903, with a separation of 102 arcsec between them) and a triplet (KP 76: 1623+2651A at z = 2.467, KP 77: 1623+2653 a...
